Tension Setting

Tension settings are used with ultra-strong metal, where the band of the ring is the only thing that holds the stone in place. For added safety, small grooves are carved into the edge of the band, where it intersects the stone. The end result is the startling appearance of the diamond. Tension settings are quite expensive as they are individually sized. In case of resizing, the necessary strength required to protect the stone will be lost.

Channel Settings

Channel settings are widely used for accent stones or simple rings, where an overall center stone or single focal point is not required. In this type of setting, diamonds of similar size and shape are used in round or princess cuts. The stones are lined in a channel inset into the ring’s band, with a narrow strip of metal along the sides to hold them in place without prongs or bars between them. As the stones are inset, it is a very safe setting option, but it does not highlight the gems properly.

Invisible Setting

The setting involves a stable position for the stone to rest in, which is attached to the band in a bypass or split design. Pave Settings

This design covers the entire surface of the ring with gems, which are either set into a minute depression or secured with thin, unobtrusive prongs. Cluster Setting

However, I’ve seen GIA certified SI1 diamonds with imperfections that were plain as day when viewing the diamond to the naked eye. How does the Internet jeweler that’s selling computerized lists of diamonds know what kind of SI1 he/she is selling? They don’t! That’s why its important to choose an Internet jeweler who owns their inventory and hand picks each diamond personally. The benefit is that you can call them and ask them to describe the diamond to you to be sure that it’s not a problem diamond. When wholesalers have problem diamonds that retail jewelers and Internet jewelers (that own their inventories) won’t buy, they list them on Internet websites because there’s nobody to verify the problem.

In the end you suffer because you unknowingly buy the problem diamond. What’s the solution? Work with an Internet jeweler that can hold the diamond in their hand and inspect it for you. Or work with a smaller yet trustworthy Internet jeweler who has a pulse on all the suppliers that they work with so they can verify the validity of the diamond grade. The larger Internet jewelers like Bluenile undoubtedly have a harder time weeding out the problem diamonds because they sell so many diamonds from these published virtual lists. You’re diamond purchase is just another number to them while the smaller Internet jewelers can spend more time with you on the phone answering your questions and sorting through their diamonds. Another benefit to shopping online is the lack of pushy salespeople to deal with. As with many retail environments you’ll occasionally run in to the hard-core salesperson at local jewelry stores. If you’re the type of person who likes to move at his/her own pace and doesn’t like to be pressured then the Internet jeweler is a great option. If you find an informative site you’ll have the time to gather information about diamonds at your own pace without the pressure of having to make a quick decision. Take your time to get the size right. Keep in mind that your finger size changes depending on whether your hands are cold or hot. Different fingers change differently but it is an average of half size (UK standard). There is little difference between two neighboring sizes, so when your jeweler gives you the size set make sure you try few sizes up and down from the first one that fits. Do this until you are really sure which one feels best. Don’t ask the jeweler to take your finger size – do it yourself. No one else can feel the ring on your finger for you. If you are in doubt, consider the weather. In hot weather your finger swells, so choose the tighter fit and vice versa. Bear in mind that it is easier and safer to most designs to be resized up rather than down. Resized piece however, is never the same, especially when it contents pave or channel set small stones. Reducing such a ring even one size is likely to loosen the setting and cause problems. The conical finger is very much one size fits all scenario. Because of almost non pronounced knuckle up to 4 consecutive ring sizes feel comfortable.The problem is: this type of finger is not safe for heavy designs, which can easy slip off or fly away with sudden move of the hand. I will recommend lighter designs or use of full or half spring. (see below)

The big knuckles require fairly large size ring to pass trough and end up on the following thinner part of the finger where it is hopelessly loose. The full spring is the best solution of this problem.

The full spring is a strip of special gold alloy fitted inside the shank of the ring which is expanding while passing the knuckle an then contracts back,” hugging” the thinner part of the finger and keeping the ring in place. While full spring takes about ¾ of the inner circumference of the shank, half spring goes halfway.

Full springs are surprisingly comfortable and effective and yet seldom used. Unfortunately they can’t be implemented on any design especially the very delicate ones. Another draw back is that fitting a spring requires some time and skill and the jeweler will be happy if he can skip it. Large number of inexperienced goldsmiths and designers does not even know about it. In my opinion full spring is a must for heavy rings with high standing large stones. If fitting full or half spring is not a viable option, soldering two small (about 1.5 mm gold beads inside the ring at 4 and 8 o’clock position will significantly reduce the swivel and self position the ring. The initial discomfort one might feel because of the two little beads inside the ring usually disappears after 2-3 days of wearing.

One common problem is the right positioning of half or ¾ studded diamond wedding rings. They tend to always turn and expose the unstudded side up. If the wedding ring is worn next to a engagement ring it is a simple and reversible procedure to tack solder them together at the back. That will perfectly position the diamond band and it will make it more difficult to loose. In fact I will recommend this procedure for any wedding-engagement ring set. If the two rings are needed apart for some ceremony the joining can be done later and as I mentioned is completely reversible if properly done.

Women almost always did; it was a reflection of the status of women in Victorian times as being as much property as companion. It was the American jewelry industry that began marketing double ring wedding sets toward the end of the 19th Century. Still, prior to 1930, only about 15% of all wedding ceremonies were “double ring.”

It was an ad executive working for DeBeers in 1950 who coined the immortal phrase “a diamond is forever” – starting a marketing campaign that transformed the institution of marriage. Within a few years both bride and groom began to wear a diamond wedding band.

Diamond Engagement Rings

The concept of the engagement ring dates back to the Fourth Lateran Council held nearly 800 years ago. Early engagement rings were plain bands of metal – gold, silver, bronze or iron, depending on one’s social status and economic class. Although it later became common to set small precious gems into these engagement rings, the first use of a ring similar to today’s diamond engagement rings date from 1477, when the Archduke of Austria wed duchess Marie of Burgundy.

The concept of men’s diamond wedding bands is also due in part to attempts to market engagement rings. Early in the last century, the American jewelry industry made an attempt to establish a “historical precedent” dating back several hundred years, in which men also received engagement rings. In fact, no such precedent ever existed, although the idea behind this strategy was later used successfully to expand the market for men’s diamond wedding bands.

Today, the jewelry industry is even more aggressive in its marketing strategies; in addition to diamond engagement rings, couples are now encouraged to wear “promise rings” prior to engagement and “eternity rings” given on a subsequent wedding anniversary.
